System Requirements

System requirements for Pisces software

QED Statistics and Community Analysis Package 4 are designed for Windows XP and Vista only; we are not aware of any reasons why they should not run under older versions of Windows, but unfortunately, we cannot guarantee this.

Otherwise, the system requirements for Pisces programs are generally very modest. Our programs will run under any version of Windows from 98 onwards, and on Macs using Windows emulation software. If you are using WinNT over a distributed network, you may need to ask your Network Administrator for permission to install software.

We suggest as a minimum:
Pentium PC running Windows XP
512MB of RAM
2 - 75 MB free hard disk space for installation (depending on program)
Obviously a low memory system will be much slower, and if you are running a complex calculation such as TWINSPAN, on a large data set, it will take a long time to complete. More modern and powerful computers will normally carry out the most complex calculations in a matter of seconds.

Our e-books require Adobe Acrobat Reader software, version 5 or later. We supply Reader versions 5.05 and 8.0 (for Windows) free on the e-book CDs. Roughly 10MB (v.5.05) to 15MB (v.8.0) of free disk space is required for installing Reader.

The PDF documents used for our e-books are also compatible with the Mac OS.

We are often asked if we write software which will run on the Mac OS. The short answer, unfortunately, is no. Many researchers use Macs, and we would very much like to provide them with software, but we simply don't have the resources to rewrite our programs from scratch for a different OS - it would likely increase the cost of the software quite substantially.

However, all is not lost, since our programs should run satisfactorily if you are using Windows emulation software on your Mac.

Similarly, we are occasionally asked the same question by Linux users. Again the short answer is 'No'. However, we suspect that our programs should run under WINE. We recommend downloading one of our demo versions to test this.
