William Buckler's 9 volumes on the larvae of the butterflies and moths represented a monumental feat of artistry over nearly 30 years. Some of the nomenclature has since changed, but the species and life-cycle descriptions and the hand-coloured illustrations remain invaluable, although they are rarely seen.
